Standing Firm for Twenty Years: The Warmth and Strength of a Power Fittings Enterprise

Posted by conwell

In the spring of 2004, inside a warehouse on the outskirts of a southern city, Zhang Xiaoyang bent over to inspect the very first batch of cable fittings just off the production line. Sunlight streamed through the dappled windows, falling upon her shoulders as she gently wiped down a stainless steel connector in her hands, treating it as if it were a work of art. “There cannot be a single flaw,” she told the three employees standing beside her. “Our products must stand the test of time—and, even more importantly, the test of conscience.”

Twenty years later, this small workshop—which began its journey in that very warehouse—has grown into a modern enterprise spanning 23,000 square meters and employing 180 people. Yet, it has never strayed from its focus on the “unassuming” niche of power distribution network and fiber optic cable fittings. Zhang Xiaoyang often tells her employees: “Some paths require you to walk a little more slowly in order to go the distance.”

I. From Four Hearts to 180 Homes

In the company’s early days, the team consisted of just four people. At the end of every workday, Zhang Xiaoyang would invariably prepare a steaming pot of vegetable soup for everyone. “People need to eat well before they can work well,” she would say with a smile as she ladled out the soup, taking the opportunity to ask each person about their family life. This spirit of care and concern was woven into the very DNA of the enterprise right from the start.

“Ms. Zhang has a particular habit,” recalls Li Jianguo, a long-serving employee. “Before any new product goes into mass production, she insists on testing it personally to ensure it is absolutely safe and harmless for the installation workers before giving the green light. She always says: ‘Our products connect power, but more importantly, they connect to the safety of thousands of households.’”

As the company expanded, Zhang Xiaoyang institutionalized her philosophy of “prioritizing human growth.” The company established a “dual-track” career development system, in which technical expertise and management leadership are accorded equal importance. Every Wednesday afternoon, production comes to a halt for two hours so that all employees can participate in learning sessions—sometimes involving technical training, other times health seminars, or even book-sharing discussions. “What moved me most is the company’s ‘Dream Fulfillment Program,’” says Chen from the Finance Department. “I wanted to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, but the fees were substantial. When the company learned of this, they voluntarily offered to cover 70% of the costs. The only condition was that, once I passed, I had to give a presentation to share my learning experience with my colleagues. CEO Zhang often says: ‘Individual growth isn’t true growth; it is the collective growth of the group that constitutes real power.’”

II. Behind Every Product Lies Responsibility

Stepping into the company’s sprawling 23,000-square-meter production facility, one sees over 30 injection molding machines and more than 30 CNC lathes lined up in neat rows. Two high-pressure casting units and two low-pressure casting units operate with high efficiency, while 10 stamping machines and 15 automated or semi-automated assembly stations work in perfect order. Yet, the most striking feature of the facility is the company’s own CNAS-accredited laboratory.

“Many people ask: ‘Why would a company that manufactures cable fittings build a laboratory with such high standards?’” says Mei, the Technical Director. “CEO Zhang’s answer is simple: ‘Because our products serve as critical links within infrastructure systems, they must be absolutely foolproof. Every single batch of products we produce must undergo testing here—tests that are even more rigorous than the national standards.’”

The company has a unique policy: during their first month of employment, every new hire must spend one week rotating through the laboratory. “This isn’t to turn them into testing experts,” explains Zhang Xiaoyang, “but rather to ensure that everyone understands that what we hold in our hands is not merely a cold, inanimate metal part; it is a bridge that bears the weight of safety and trust.”

It is precisely this almost obsessive pursuit of professional excellence that has enabled the company to establish a firm foothold amidst fierce market competition. Late one winter night, the company received an urgent phone call: the power grid in a certain region had been compromised by ice and snow, creating an immediate need for a batch of specialized cable fittings. It was the eve of the Lunar New Year, and most employees had already left for their holiday leave. With a single phone call from Zhang Xiaoyang, more than 30 local employees voluntarily returned to the factory, completing the entire production and shipment process within just 48 hours. “That was one of our proudest moments,” recalls Liu, the Production Manager. “Not because of how much money we made, but because we helped safeguard the warmth and comfort of thousands of households.”

III. Vegetarianism, Environmental Protection, and a 30,000-Kilometer Journey of Educational Support

At 11:30 AM, the air in the company cafeteria fills with a delicate, fragrant aroma. The meal being enjoyed by the 180 employees is a completely vegetarian lunch. “At first, many people didn’t understand,” said Sun Jie, the administrative supervisor, with a smile. “So, President Zhang led us in learning about healthy eating and even hired a nutritionist to design our menus. Now, everyone has fallen in love with this way of eating—so much so that quite a few employees have even encouraged their families to adopt it.”

Environmental principles permeate every detail of the operation: 100% of production waste is recycled, and all the greenery within the factory grounds is personally adopted and tended to by the employees. Even more remarkably, 3% of the company’s annual profits are automatically channeled into a “Compassion Fund,” dedicated exclusively to educational aid and social welfare initiatives.

“We have been providing financial aid to students in remote regions for twelve consecutive years,” said Lin Jie, who oversees the welfare programs, as she paged through a photo album. “Among these children, some have already graduated from university and returned to their hometowns. What moved me most was that last year, three of the students we had supported voluntarily asked to intern at the company during their summer break; they said they wanted to see for themselves what kind of people were behind the help they had received.”

The company maintains a cherished tradition: every year, it organizes a voluntary outreach trip for employees to visit the students they support. The cumulative distance covered on these journeys now exceeds 30,000 kilometers. “Walking along those rugged mountain paths—and placing the financial aid and school supplies directly into the children’s hands—is when we truly grasp the meaning of a phrase President Zhang often repeats: ‘The true value of an enterprise lies not in how much money it earns, but in how many lives it touches with warmth.’”

IV. The Balance Between Professionalism and Compassion

Some industry peers once questioned Zhang Xiaoyang’s management philosophy: “Vegetarian meals, social welfare initiatives, and such generous employee benefits—won’t the costs be astronomical?” Zhang Xiaoyang would simply respond with a smile: “We save on the costs associated with high employee turnover; we save on the costs of quality-related mishaps; and we save on the potential risks to our brand reputation. Most importantly, we win people’s hearts.”

This “winning of hearts” is reflected in numerous subtle details: the company steadfastly refuses to lay off employees—even during the economically turbulent year of 2008 and throughout the pandemic; it organizes annual comprehensive health checkups for all staff members, extending the invitation to their family members as well; and it has established a “Family Care Leave” policy, allowing employees to take paid time off to care for immediate family members when they fall ill.

“In my tenth year working here, my mother fell gravely ill,” recalled Zhao Shifu, a long-serving employee, his voice catching with emotion. “The company not only granted me an extended leave of absence, but President Zhang herself personally reached out to hospital specialists on my behalf. She told me that the company is a home for all its employees—and when a family member is in trouble, we must do everything in our power to help.”

It is precisely this sense of cohesion that has enabled the company to cultivate its expertise deeply over two decades, ultimately establishing itself as a true “hidden champion” within its industry. The state-of-the-art production equipment yields not only products that meet international standards but also a series of weighty commitments.

V. Legacy and Continuity

In 2024, during the celebration marking the company’s twentieth anniversary, Zhang Xiaoyang announced a significant decision: she would transfer a portion of the company’s shares into an employee stock ownership plan. “This enterprise does not belong to me alone; it is something we have created together. I hope that even after I am gone, the company’s philosophy will continue to endure.”

During the celebration, a special video moved many to tears—it featured messages of gratitude from students the company had sponsored over the years, many of whom had since become teachers, engineers, and doctors. One young woman looked into the camera and said, “Thank you for making me believe that there is a form of success in this world defined by using kindness and professional expertise to transform the lives of others.”

That evening, just as she had twenty years prior, Zhang Xiaoyang took a slow stroll through the factory grounds. Beneath the setting sun, the lights in the laboratory had already come on, where several young technicians were conducting final tests on a new product. In the cafeteria, employees on the night shift were enjoying a steaming, wholesome vegetarian dinner. On the bulletin board hung a photograph of a newly constructed library at a primary school in the mountains.

“Ms. Zhang,” a newly hired university graduate working as a reporter asked her, “what do you consider our greatest success over these past twenty years?”

Gazing at the busy yet serene people throughout the factory grounds, Zhang Xiaoyang spoke softly: “We have proven that a business can be both professional and compassionate—that it can simultaneously pursue excellence and harbor a heart filled with benevolence. We have upheld the absolute baseline of product quality while expanding the horizons of humanistic care. *That* is what true sustainable development is all about.”

As night fell, the lights of the factory grounds diffused into a warm, gentle glow amidst the thin mists characteristic of the Jiangnan region. Within this enterprise—a manufacturer of cable fittings that has stood firm for two decades—every piece of precision equipment tells a story of professionalism, and every smiling face radiates the power of human warmth. Binding all of this together is a steadfast, unwavering original intention: to safeguard safety through expertise, to warm hearts through care, and to forge extraordinary value within a field that might otherwise appear ordinary.

Zhang Xiaoyang knew that they would continue down this path—walking slowly, walking steadily—toward many more decades to come. For true connection is never merely the physical contact between metal and metal; it is, above all, the warm exchange between human beings—the shared growth of professional excellence and moral conscience unfolding across the passage of time.
